When: India vs South Africa, 1st ODI, March 12 at 1:30pm IST | 8am GMT

Where: Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamsala

What to expect: Well, turn away now if you're not a fan of weather playing spoilsport. The pitch had some time in the mild sunshine on the sidelines of India's optional training session but has since been gift wrapped in multiple layers of covers. Save for a miracle, it could remain that way on match day as well given the unfortunate weather forecast. The winters in the north of India have overstayed their welcome this year, extending even beyond Holi and bringing occasional unwelcome rain to add to this biting cold. The outfield close to the boundary markings is still reeling from the burst of rain in the wee hours of the pre-game day. The rain expectedly returned late in the evening and the general forecast, varying from light rain to thunderstorms, doesn't get much better until the weekend. Chasing has been a norm in Dharamsala's limited limited-overs history, should we get to that.

Team News

India: The hosts would likely thrust all the three men on comeback trail straight into their XI especially since they've all proved their match fitness in a local T20 competition in Mumbai. Prithvi Shaw could continue at the top of the order, this time partnering Dhawan, even though the squad sees Shubman Gill returning to the format after a year. Pandya and Jadeja at No. 6 and 7, along with one of the two wristspinners, gives India the luxury of six frontline bowling options to address their inability to defend big totals in New Zealand. Alternatively, if they look to stretch their batting order and give Manish Pandey an extended run, Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav could both make it at the expense of Jadeja and Navdeep Saini.

Squad: Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, Virat Kohli (C), KL Rahul, Manish Pandey, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah, Navdeep Saini, Kuldeep Yadav, Shubman Gill.

South Africa: The tourists had only forced changes, whatever little they made, in their three-nil whitewash of Australia. But to accommodate the returning duo of du Plessis and van der Dussen, the visitors might be handing out some pink slips for the time being. Bowling-wise, they've brought left-arm George Linde back on tour but the conditions in the lead-up may not warrant a second spinner in the line-up for them. Lungi Ngidi should be back, having given been adequately rested ahead of this short, packed tour while Temba Bavuma - due to undergo a fitness test on the sidelines of what will be their only hit in the nets before the game - remains a doubtful starter according to skipper Quinton de Kock

Squad: Quinton de Kock (C & wk), Temba Bavuma, Rassie van der Dussen, Faf du Plessis, Kyle Verreynne, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Jon-Jon Smuts, Andile Phehlukwayo, Lungi Ngidi, Lutho Sipamla, Beuran Hendricks, Anrich Nortje, George Linde, Keshav Maharaj, Janneman Malan.

What they said?

"He's probably come in and helped out all our youngsters. He was given a chance to have a break. Obviously, it's been a long season. So I think it was important for him just to put his feet up for a little bit. You know, just regather his thoughts and we're just glad to have him back with us. And we haven't decided where he is going to bat for us at the moment, but we'll come up with a decision later." - Quinton de Kockon Faf du Plessis's much-anticipated ODI return

"It may become difficult to maintain pace when you are returning from an injury because it always plays on the mind of the pacer that if you strive for pace then the injury might reoccur. The best option is such a case is to play matches as much as possible to gain confidence that you are match-fit, like I did," Bhuvneshwar Kumar on his match preparedness
